Building a synth bass to your description with Studio 56

Answer in brief

Studio 56 is our editorial choice for a synth bass built to your description. You write the bass you hear, such as a round sub for a slow R&B song or a snarling reese for drum and bass, and it builds an instrument that plays in your DAW. When the track needs the sound of a real electric or upright bass, pick a sampled or modeled bass guitar instead, and judge every candidate by playing one bass line against your own kick.

Studio 56 publishes this site, and what it builds are synth basses rather than recordings of a bass guitar. It is not a measured ranking of every bass VST.

From a sentence to a bass you can play

In the Studio 56 plugin you write the bass you hear in plain words. That could be “a warm round sub for a slow R&B song that never covers the kick” or “a reese bass with two detuned saws that drift apart for drum and bass”. Studio 56 turns that into an instrument with controls and presets of its own, which usually takes about 5 minutes. The bass plays in Studio 56 on any track in your DAW and is saved to your Studio 56 library without a step from you.

After it is built you can keep changing it, and ask for new presets when the next song wants a shorter, brighter or dirtier version.

Why basses are among its strongest instruments

Studio 56 does not write new code for each instrument. It picks from a library of about a hundred verified DSP blocks and sets and wires them to fit what you asked for. For bass that means virtual-analog, wavetable, FM and sub oscillators, an 808 bass and a range of drive and distortion stages. Every instrument it builds can play mono or legato with glide, so a bass line slides the way the glide guide describes.

When a sampled or modeled bass is the better pick

Studio 56 makes synth basses. It does not make sampled recordings of a bass guitar, so when a song needs fingers on an electric or a bow on an upright, a recreated bass is the honest choice. Trilian and MODO BASS 2 cover electric and upright, Scarbee Rickenbacker Bass gives a picked rock tone and Session Bassist Upright Bass suits jazz and soul. If you mix in Pro Tools, Studio 56 does not load there.

Questions and answers

Can Studio 56 make a bass that sounds like a bass guitar?

It can build a plucky synth bass with a short attack that sits where a bass guitar would. It uses no recordings of a real bass, so it will not pass for one the way a sampled or modeled bass guitar can.

Can I release songs that use a bass I made?

Yes. A bass you made can play on your songs and in videos, live sets and commercial releases. Selling the instrument itself is the one thing not allowed.
