Writing a believable electric or upright bass part
Answer in brief
Write within the instrument’s real range, play one note at a time, vary how hard each note is struck and use the slides, mutes and playing styles the instrument offers. The small gaps between notes matter as much as the notes.
Stay in the range a bass really plays
A four-string bass goes down to E at about 41 Hz, and five- and six-string basses add a low B below it. Most bass lines live in the lowest two octaves above that E. Notes far higher, or several notes at once, give away that a keyboard played the part.
One note at a time, with gaps
A bass player lifts a finger or mutes a string between notes, and that small silence gives the groove its shape. Shorten notes slightly rather than letting each one run into the next. Keep long notes for the places a player would let a string ring.
Vary how hard each note is played
Sampled and modeled basses change tone with velocity, so the same velocity on every note sounds mechanical. Accent the notes on the beat, play passing notes softer and let ghost notes sit very quietly between them.
Use the playing styles the instrument offers
Scarbee Rickenbacker Bass has open and palm-muted notes played with a pick. Session Bassist Upright Bass offers open, muted, bowed and harmonic notes as well as slides. MODO BASS 2 lets you change the playing style and the hand position. Switching styles in the right places does more for realism than any effect after the instrument.
Start from a pattern when you are stuck
Session Bassist Upright Bass comes with more than 220 patterns and phrases, and MODO BASS 2 with more than 1,500 bass patterns. Take one as a starting point and change its notes to fit your chords, so the part ends up yours.
